Rochester Chen Style Taijiquan

Wu Style

The Wu Chien Chuan Style Taijiquan form is often taught as three distinct variations:

1) Square (fang) - Linear movements.  Complex opening and closing of the body that is to be ultimately performed simultaneously is broken into pieces and performed serially (e.g., perform opening part of move, then closing).  Many pauses are used, where the pause (yin) should be at least as long as a movement (yang), the pauses provide benefits like stationary posture work.  Trains careful stepping and pivoting details.  Stretching of the psoas can be felt and practiced is a slow, stop-and-go format. Could take up to 20 minutes (or more) to perform.  Teaches positional details. Often considered pre-taijiquan.

2) Large Round - Rounds out the square form.  Arms often move together in a relaxed swinging manner that is a little simpler than the ultimate application. Performed at a moderate pace, usually around 6 minutes.

3) Compact - A lot of movement of the spine and torso, and less movement of the limbs. The compact nature generates short power, where contact is maintained with the opponent through a limb, while the spine and waist load with potential and unload into the opponent. Constant spiraling of the limbs.  Nimble, shuffling steps and efficient foot pivots about the edge of your heels. The martial form, and it can also the best for qigong depending on how you practice. Perform at various rates from 2 - 6 minutes.
